Windows Activation Error Codes and Fixes

Activation errors usually stem not from the key itself but from edition mismatches, clock settings, system files or the wrong installation channel. Pick your error code below — each page explains what the error means, its most common causes and the step-by-step fix.

• 0xC004C003Product key blocked0xC004C003 means Microsoft's activation server considers the product key you entered blocked or invalid. The most common causes are the key being active on another device, an edition mismatch (for example a Pro key on a Home installation) and revoked keys. • 0xC004C008Key usage limit exceeded0xC004C008 tells you the product key has already been used on the allowed number of devices. It appears when a single-device key is activated on a second computer, or when the same key was previously entered on another installation. • 0xC004F050Invalid product key (edition mismatch)0xC004F050 states that the entered key is considered invalid for this Windows installation. By far the most common cause is edition confusion: a Pro key entered on a Home installation (or the reverse), or installation media prepared with the wrong edition. • 0xC004F014Product key not available0xC004F014 means no product key is installed for Windows to use during activation. It usually happens when Activate is pressed without ever entering a key, after the previous key was removed, or when the license store is corrupted. • 0xC004F034License not found or invalid (server busy)0xC004F034 means the Software Licensing Service could not find the license or considered it invalid during activation. It is common after major Windows updates and when activation servers are busy; it is usually not a key problem. • 0xC004F038KMS count insufficient (enterprise activation)0xC004F038 means the computer reached a KMS server, but the number of clients on that server is below Microsoft's threshold (25 for Windows). On a home PC it indicates the system was installed from a volume image and stayed on the KMS channel. • 0xC004F039KMS not enabled / host not responding0xC004F039 means Windows sent a request to a KMS host but received no response, or the KMS service is not enabled on that host. On corporate networks a firewall blocking TCP port 1688 is the typical cause. On a home PC it indicates the machine is on the KMS channel and needs a genuine key.See the fix
• 0xC004F041KMS host itself is not activated0xC004F041 means the KMS host the client reached has not yet been activated by Microsoft; an inactive host cannot activate clients. It typically appears on systems that were previously activated with pirated tools, once Microsoft's check runs.
