0xC004F210: Key edition doesn't match the installed Windows
0xC004F210 means the edition of the key you entered differs from the installed Windows edition — most often a Pro key on a Home installation or a Home key on Pro. The key is valid; it simply doesn't match the installation. Changing the edition or using a key for the right edition resolves it.
Most common causes
- A Pro key was entered on Home (or the reverse)
- The wrong edition was chosen from the installation media
- A standard key was entered on a special edition such as Windows 10 N/KN
- An Enterprise/Education key was entered on Pro
Step-by-step fix
- Compare the installed edition (Start → "winver") with the key edition in your purchase e-mail.
- On Home with a Pro key: enter the Pro key under Settings → System → Activation → "Change product key"; Windows upgrades the edition to Pro in place (no reinstall).
- On Pro with a Home key: downgrading is not supported; clean-install Home or obtain a Pro key.
- If the upgrade stalls, try "slmgr /ipk KEY" and "slmgr /ato" in an elevated Command Prompt.
- If it persists, run Settings → Activation → "Troubleshoot"; otherwise send the error code to your seller.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does upgrading from Home to Pro erase my data?
No. When you enter the Pro key via "Change product key", Windows performs an in-place edition upgrade; your files and programs are kept and it takes a few minutes.
Does a Windows 10 key give this error on Windows 11?
Not if the edition matches (Pro→Pro). The error only appears when edition types such as Home/Pro/Enterprise differ.
