Server Software

The Server Software category brings together the two Microsoft product families you need to licence your business's server infrastructure: the Windows Server operating system and the SQL Server database engine. This page has no product of its own — it's a buyer's guide that points you to the right sub-category.

Built for IT managers, system administrators and business owners, this category covers everything from a single physical server to heavy virtualisation, from file and print sharing to enterprise database workloads — all with genuine, invoiced licences and fast digital delivery.

In concrete terms: a business setting up file sharing and Active Directory for a 10-50 person office typically needs just one Windows Server Standard licence. A hosting provider running dozens of virtual servers for clients on the same hardware should look at Datacenter instead. A business running an accounting package, ERP or CRM that needs a relational database must licence SQL Server separately, on top of the operating system.

Which server software is right for you?

In short: if you run a single physical server with at most one or two virtual machines, Windows Server Standard is both sufficient and the most economical choice. If you run many virtual machines on the same physical hardware — a hosting platform or data centre — you need Windows Server Datacenter. If your business runs an ERP, CRM, accounting package or custom application that needs a relational database, you need a separate SQL Server licence — it does not include the operating system and installs on top of Windows Server.

Choosing a version: 2012 R2 through 2025

For new deployments, 2022 or 2025 stand out with longer support windows, stronger security (secured-core server, enhanced encryption) and container/Kubernetes support. 2016 and 2019 remain widely used where existing applications or hardware require compatibility with those releases. 2012 R2 is chosen for specific scenarios where legacy, business-critical systems must be maintained. If you're unsure which version fits your existing infrastructure, reach out via our WhatsApp support line before you buy. If you're planning a migration from an older version, confirm that your current server roles (AD, DNS, file server, etc.) are supported on the target version — our support line can point you in the right direction.

Perpetual licence, not a subscription

The Windows Server and SQL Server keys you buy from Karınca Lisans are perpetual licences. Unlike Microsoft's cloud-based CSP or Azure subscription models, you pay once and your key remains valid indefinitely on the server where it's activated — no monthly or annual renewal required. If you run on-premises hardware with a fixed cost structure rather than cloud elasticity, this model is usually more economical. Most Windows Server editions also carry downgrade rights, letting you install an earlier version within the same product family — for example, a 2022 Standard or Datacenter licence lets you install 2019 or 2016 — which is valuable if your applications or drivers need an older release.

Delivery, activation and corporate invoicing

Server and SQL Server licence keys are usually emailed within 1-90 minutes of payment confirmation. One critical point to note: once you receive your key, you must activate it on your server within 1 day (24 hours). Activation is a one-time event — if you later reformat or reinstall the server, the same key cannot be reused — so we recommend finalising your installation plan before you purchase. If you miss the activation window, your key may become inactive; contact our support team and we'll help you resolve it. Once activated, your licence remains valid for the life of that server. Every purchase comes with an e-invoice for your corporate accounting; simply provide your company name and tax ID at checkout.

Genuine and verifiable

Every Windows Server and SQL Server key we sell is genuine and verifiable through Microsoft's official activation servers — you can check your licence status directly on your server. Depending on the number of users or devices connecting to your network, you may also need separately licensed Client Access Licences (CALs); your CAL requirement depends on user count and access method, so get in touch via WhatsApp support if you have questions.
