Windows Server Datacenter Licenses

Windows Server Datacenter Licenses products

The Windows Server Datacenter Licenses category is where you'll find Microsoft's top-tier server operating system keys, letting you run an unlimited number of virtual machines on the same physical server. It's built for hosting providers, data centres, IT teams running heavy virtualisation, and businesses operating cloud-based workloads.

Datacenter includes every core server role found in Standard (Active Directory, file/print sharing, IIS, DNS/DHCP) plus enterprise-scale features like Storage Spaces Direct, Shielded Virtual Machines and unlimited Hyper-V virtualisation rights.

Datacenter is a great fit for specific scenarios: a hosting provider running VPS/VDS instances for clients, a data centre running dozens of virtual machines on the same physical hardware, or an enterprise IT team building private cloud infrastructure. The more virtualisation-heavy your workload, the more Datacenter's fixed cost outperforms buying multiple Standard licences.

Which version should I choose?

Choose from five versions, from 2012 R2 through 2025. For a new virtualisation deployment, 2022 or 2025 Datacenter is recommended for the longest support window and current security features (secured-core server, enhanced encryption); 2022 also brings Azure Arc integration, while 2025 ships with secured-core protections enabled by default. 2019 and 2016 remain common where existing infrastructure requires compatibility with those releases.

What does "unlimited virtualisation" actually mean?

A Datacenter licence places no cap on the number of virtual machines you run on the licensed physical server — you can spin up as many Windows Server VMs as your hardware resources (RAM, CPU, storage) allow. That's well beyond the 2-VM right included in a single Standard licence, and the value gap widens the more virtualisation-heavy your workload becomes. If you're running only a handful of virtual machines, you likely don't need Datacenter's capacity — take a look at our Windows Server Standard category instead.

Perpetual licence, not a subscription

The Windows Server Datacenter key you buy from Karınca Lisans is a perpetual licence. Unlike Microsoft's cloud-based CSP or Azure subscription models, you pay once and your key remains valid indefinitely on the server where it's activated. Datacenter also carries downgrade rights within the same product family — a 2022 Datacenter licence, for instance, lets you install 2019 or 2016 — which matters if your existing virtualisation stack needs an older release.

Delivery and activation

Your key is usually emailed within 1-90 minutes of payment confirmation. Once delivered, you must activate it on your server within 1 day (24 hours); activation is a one-time event, and the same key cannot be reused if you later reformat the server. We recommend finalising your installation and virtualisation plan before purchasing. Once activated, your licence remains valid for the life of that server. Every purchase includes an e-invoice for your corporate accounting — just provide your company name and tax ID at checkout. Depending on how many users or devices connect to your network, you may also need separately licensed Client Access Licences (CALs). Questions about version choice or licensing model?
