Windows Activation Error
0xC004F050: Invalid product key (edition mismatch)
0xC004F050 states that the entered key is considered invalid for this Windows installation. By far the most common cause is edition confusion: a Pro key entered on a Home installation (or the reverse), or installation media prepared with the wrong edition. Verifying your key type against the installed edition resolves most cases.
Most common causes
- A Pro key was entered on Home, or a Home key on Pro
- The wrong edition was selected during a clean install
- Leftover license data from a previous Windows installation conflicts
- The key was copied incorrectly (O/0, I/1 mix-ups)
Step-by-step fix
- Compare the installed edition (winver) with the key edition in your purchase email.
- Re-type the key manually, all 25 characters including dashes.
- If editions differ: align them with a clean install of the correct edition, or use the edition-upgrade flow under Settings → Activation.
- Run Settings → System → Activation → "Troubleshoot".
- Open an elevated command prompt and try "slmgr /ipk YOURKEY" followed by "slmgr /ato".
- If it persists, send the error code and a winver screenshot to your seller.
Frequently Asked Questions
I bought a Pro key for my Home computer; can I get past this error?
Yes — Windows has a Home-to-Pro edition upgrade flow: you enter the key in the upgrade step under Settings → Activation. Entering it directly on a Home installation produces 0xC004F050.
The key matches the edition but the error remains. Why?
Typos (O vs 0, I vs 1) and leftovers of a previous installation are the two most frequent causes. Re-type the key manually; if that fails, enter it with slmgr /ipk and activate with /ato.
