0x8007007B: Syntax/DNS error (KMS lookup)
0x8007007B (and its close relative 0x8007232B, "DNS name does not exist") shows Windows is looking up a KMS server's DNS record for activation and cannot find one. For individual users it almost always means a system installed from a volume image never had a genuine key entered. Entering your genuine Retail/OEM/MAK key clears the error.
Most common causes
- The system was installed from a volume (enterprise) image and no genuine key was ever entered
- The key was typed with a missing dash or a wrong character
- On a corporate network the KMS DNS (SRV) record cannot be found (company machines)
Step-by-step fix
- Enter your genuine key under Settings → System → Activation → "Change product key".
- If that fails, run "slmgr /ipk YOURKEY" and "slmgr /ato" in an elevated command prompt.
- Type the key manually, dashes included.
- On a company machine, contact your IT department (the KMS DNS record is a server-side matter).
