Windows Activation Error
0x80072EE7: Server name could not be resolved (DNS/Internet)
0x80072EE7 means Windows could not resolve the address of Microsoft's activation server — it cannot reach the internet or DNS. An offline installation, a faulty DNS setting, blocking lines added to the hosts file, and VPN/proxy are typical causes. Once connectivity and DNS are fixed, activation completes normally.

- No or intermittent internet connection
- The DNS server is unresponsive or misconfigured
- The hosts file contains lines blocking Microsoft addresses (leftover of a pirated tool)
- A VPN, proxy or firewall is blocking activation traffic
Step-by-step fix
- Confirm microsoft.com opens in a browser; if not, fix the modem/network connection.
- Turn off VPN and proxy (Settings → Network & Internet → Proxy).
- Run "ipconfig /flushdns" in an elevated Command Prompt; temporarily set DNS to 8.8.8.8 / 1.1.1.1 and retry.
- Open Notepad as administrator, remove any lines containing microsoft.com from C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and save.
- Retry under Settings → System → Activation or run "slmgr /ato"; otherwise use phone activation via Windows + R → "slui 4".

The most common cause is blocking lines in the hosts file; pirated activation tools block Microsoft servers there. Remove the lines and flush the DNS cache.
Does phone activation need the internet?
No. The slui 4 wizard shows an installation ID; you convert it into a confirmation ID by phone or from another device at aka.ms/aoh and type it in.
