Windows Activation Error
0xC004D302: Trusted store must be rebuilt (tokens.dat)
0xC004D302 means the trusted store that holds Windows licensing data has been corrupted or tampered with. Restoring from backup, disk cloning, "rearm" tools and some optimiser programs cause it. Rebuilding the license store and re-entering the key resolves it safely.
Most common causes
- The system was cloned to another disk or restored from an image
- A pirated "rearm"/activation tool modified tokens.dat
- An optimiser/cleaner program touched the licensing folder
- The license store was corrupted after an improper shutdown
Step-by-step fix
- Stop the Software Protection service with "net stop sppsvc" in an elevated Command Prompt.
- Rename tokens.dat in %windir%\System32\spp\store\2.0\ to tokens.bak.
- Start the service with "net start sppsvc"; Windows creates a fresh tokens.dat.
- Enter the key with "slmgr /ipk KEY" and activate with "slmgr /ato" (you may need to re-enter Office keys too).
- If it persists, run "sfc /scannow" and "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" and retry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does renaming tokens.dat affect other programs?
It only affects Microsoft licenses (Windows and Office), which you must re-enter. Other programs' licenses are not stored in this file.
I get "access denied" when renaming?
The service is still running. Make sure "net stop sppsvc" completed successfully; if necessary end sppsvc from Task Manager.
