Windows Activation Error
0x80072EFD: Could not connect to the server (network/proxy)
0x80072EFD means Windows could not open a connection to Microsoft's activation server; the address resolves but the connection is blocked by a firewall, proxy or unstable network. It is common on corporate networks and over VPN. Connecting directly (without proxy) and temporarily disabling security software usually resolves it.
Most common causes
- A proxy or corporate firewall is blocking activation traffic
- The connection over VPN is unstable
- Third-party security software is intercepting HTTPS traffic
- The Winsock/TCP-IP stack is corrupted
Step-by-step fix
- Turn off VPN; disable manual proxy under Settings → Network & Internet → Proxy.
- Temporarily disable third-party firewall/antivirus and retry under Settings → Activation.
- Run "netsh winsock reset" and "netsh int ip reset" in an elevated Command Prompt, then restart.
- If possible, try "slmgr /ato" from a different network (e.g. a phone hotspot); this diagnoses a corporate network block.
- If network access is not possible, use phone activation via Windows + R → "slui 4".
Frequently Asked Questions
I'm on a company network and the error persists?
Corporate firewalls may block activation endpoints. Ask IT to allow Microsoft activation endpoints (activation.sls.microsoft.com etc.) or activate over a hotspot.
Is activating over a hotspot a problem?
No. Activation is a one-time verification; the network used does not matter, and no connection is needed once it completes.
