What Is a Activation?
Activation is the process of verifying on Microsoft's server that your copy of Windows or Office is genuine. After successful activation the software runs fully featured, without restrictions.
In Windows, activation happens under Settings → System → Activation; in Office, inside the app or through account association. It completes within seconds over the internet; some scenarios use phone activation (slui 4).
Activation errors mostly stem not from the key itself but from edition mismatches, clock settings or the installation channel. Our error-codes guide walks through fixes for the nine most common errors.
