How to Redeem a Steam Key: Step-by-Step Activation Guide

There are two official ways to redeem a Steam game code (key): in the Steam client, by opening the Games menu in the top-left corner and clicking "Activate a Product on Steam", or in your browser, by going to store.steampowered.com/account/registerkey and pasting the code there. With either method, once you accept the Steam Subscriber Agreement the code is registered to your account and the game is permanently added to your library.

Redeeming a key is free and usually takes less than a minute. Three things matter: the code has to be entered correctly, it has to match your account's region, and it must not have been used on another account before. In this guide we walk through both methods step by step and explain what common errors such as "invalid product code", "region restriction" and "already activated" actually mean — along with the fix for each one.

Method 1: Redeeming the key in the Steam client

If Steam is installed on your computer, this is the fastest route:

1. Open the Steam client and sign in with the account you want to add the game to.
2. Click the Games menu in the top-left corner.
3. Select "Activate a Product on Steam...".
4. In the window that opens, click Next and accept the Steam Subscriber Agreement.
5. Type or paste your product code into the box, dashes included, and click Next.
6. The confirmation screen shows the name of the game being activated; when you close the window, the game has been added to your library and you can start downloading it right away if you like.

Once activation completes, Steam also sends a confirmation message to the email address registered to your account. The game is now tied to your account: whichever computer you install Steam on, signing in with the same account lets you download it again. If you can't see the game in your library, make sure the filters in the left panel (such as showing only "Installed" games) are switched off.

Method 2: Redeeming the key in your browser

If you're on a computer without the Steam client, or you want to register the code to your account straight from your phone, use the browser method:

1. Go to store.steampowered.com/account/registerkey in your browser.
2. Sign in with your Steam account (you may be asked for a Steam Guard verification code).
3. Paste your code into the Product Code field.
4. Tick the box confirming that you accept the Steam Subscriber Agreement.
5. Click Continue; the game is added to your library instantly.

Entering the code: dashes, letters and common typos

Steam keys usually consist of 15 characters in the XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX format, separated by dashes; some older games use longer formats. Keep these rules in mind when entering a code:

• Enter the code with its dashes; the safest approach is copy-and-paste rather than typing it out.
• Use capital letters; if you're typing by hand, double-check every single character.
• The most commonly confused characters are 0 (zero) and the letter O, 1 and I, 8 and B, and 5 and S.
• Make sure no spaces were copied before or after the code; a single invisible space is enough to trigger an "invalid code" error.
• If you make too many failed attempts in a short time, Steam blocks further attempts on your account for roughly one hour. This is not a punishment but an automatic security measure; wait it out and try again.

What is region locking, and what does it mean for accounts in Turkey?

To protect price differences between countries, game publishers produce some keys so that they can only be activated in specific regions. This is called a region lock. A key produced solely for the Russia/CIS region, for example, will not work on a Steam account registered in Turkey and will throw a country restriction error during activation.

As of July 2026, Steam's Turkish store lists prices in US dollars, and accounts in Turkey can activate region-free "global" (ROW) keys without any trouble. Still, before buying, make sure the key's region is clearly stated on the product page; a key with no region information at all is the one most likely to cause problems.

One important warning: activating a region-locked code through a VPN, pretending to be in another country, violates the Steam Subscriber Agreement. When Steam detects this, the game can be removed from your library, and in repeated cases your account can face restrictions. Saving a few dollars is not worth putting a game library you've built up over years at risk.

Can a Steam key be gifted?

You can pass a still unused code on to anyone you like; the game belongs to whichever account the code is activated on. That makes buying a key a practical way to gift a game to a friend. However, once a game has been activated, it is bound to that account for good: it cannot be moved to another account, cannot be taken back, and cannot be turned into a "gift" afterwards. Steam's own gifting system is a separate thing; it works through the "Buy as a gift" option when purchasing from the store and never produces a key.

For players in the same household there is also Steam's family sharing feature: eligible games in your library can be played by members of your family group from their own accounts. Not every game supports family sharing, though; if you want to guarantee that everyone can play at the same time with their own progress, each account needs to redeem its own code.

How do you choose a safe Steam key?

The biggest risk in the key market is codes bought with stolen credit cards or codes whose region has been concealed; keys like these can be revoked by the publisher even weeks after activation. For a safe purchase, look for the following:

• Invoiced sales: A seller that issues a proper corporate invoice is showing it stands behind the source of the code.
• Region information: The product page should state clearly whether the key works in Turkey.
• Recorded delivery: The code should be delivered to an account or email address you can get back to later.
• A real support channel: There should be someone you can actually reach if the code causes trouble.
